The scanning was produced with a process called photogrammetry which creates a 3d file out of photos of the ‘object’ from different angels. This specific created stop motion sequence consists of 8 poses and their trajectory – which was translated in a total of 200 steps, which was being recorded by a 3d scan studio that consisted out of 128 dslr camera’s. I would like to turn this process around. database.’&nbsp; ( Hito Steyerl, ‘Politics of Post-Representation’, Dis-Magazine, 2014 ) The project Recognized / Not Recognized &nbsp;revolves around the question: ‘What features determine ‘successfull’ news photos?’The first stage of the project was an analyses of the databases of the five biggest press agencies and calculating how succesfull each image is on the google indexed web. This analyses found its way in several visual presentations. The core presentation is a movement study. This choreography for nine dancers is co-designed with Marjolein Vogels and based on the characteristics of ‘successful’ and ‘unsuccessful’ news images, and is presented in a two-channel video installation. The video installation places a choreography based on successful images in conjunction with a choreography based on unsuccessful images. All original photographs were taken at the same moment, on the same spot and for the same press agency. By juxtaposing these two series of images, as captured by dancers, they form a parallel choreography in which the dancers move from one frozen position into another position. Each pose is an expression of an actual photograph. This resulted in a database of approx. 850.000 images. By using image recognition software from Google (and some proxies), I determined how many times an individual image exists on the google indexed internet. In other words, the reproduction rate of each image is calculated. ( ‘What do Images Want?’, 2005 van W.J.T Mitchell) The process of distinguishing a successful news images from the unsuccessful ones, is an interesting matter that could become the basis of a built in algorithm for the camera. With face and body movement recognition, the software itself – just like the smile detection software in recent consumer cameras – could deduct a successful composition and automatically decides to take the picture (or automatically filter the right still from moving imagery). You could say that with the use of Machine Vision as a technology and method, I am analysing and studying the news image by applying a particular dance notation in reverse to deconstruct its desired features. From the enormous sea of photographic data, we tend to choose and therefore find those images that suit our eye and affirm the Western compositional tradition we are surrounded by. The google algorythm is already built on the validation of certain presets and stereotypes. At the moment – with a little bit of effort – unsuccessful photos can still be found behind a login wall. However in the future these images would not even be registrered by the camera, and if the camera delivers them than it is very unlikely they can be retrieved. Experiment The participants were shown 250 popular and 250 not popular news images, in a randomized order.Every image was seen for 4 seconds and after 20 images a black screen was being presented so the test person could take a break and press the space bar if they wanted to continue. Before the experiment all participants were briefed about the general setup of the experiment and their task. A short training session (consisting of 3 images) was performed to allow participants to familiarize. The images provided in the training were not intend- ed to be anchoring stimuli for the scoring scale. At With the eye-tracking data of the participants, heatmaps were created. In short, a heatmap shows the relative intensity of a value within an array. For eye-tracking this means the number of times that the eyes fixated upon a certain part of an image. As the number of fixations increase, so do the numbers – ultimately displayed as a ‘hotter’ color on the heatmap. 4. Results In analyzing the results, possible relationships between eye movements’ characteristics and the popularity of an image were investigated. The spread of saliency values across the image measures whether the attention was directed towards a concentrated area (low clutter) or was instead distributed through-out the image (high clutter). Here the data shows a correlation between the popularity of an image and the amount of clutter or ROI (Regions of Interests). The less fixations are scattered within the image, the more it is likely that the image has a high ranking on Google. The fixation points within the popular images were on one or two faces mostly centered in the image. The focus points on the unpopular images were more scattered across the image and also more faces caught the attention. When writing down these sentences the bot tries to generate handwriting thanks to another deep learning algorithm (RNN with Tensorflos). Visitors are invited to take a seat and place a sensor on their earlobe. Their heart rate variability (HRV), the period between heartbeats, will immediately become audible as the sound of ticking metal friction on ceramics, and squeaking polysterene. Changes in HRV directly impact on the sound composition by Sjoerd Leijten and vice versa. The sensors register all the irregularities of the heartbeat, which fluctuates in response to physical and emotional factors. Because of the complexities involved in identifying the cause of individual fluctuations, science often dismisses small variations as irrelevant, and only average readings are used for examinations. Coralie Vogelaar explores the “noise” that is ususally filtered out in this hybrid cross of technological research and fine art - the installation exudes the atmosphere of a test environment, with its aluminium tubing, visible cables, and the inbuilt and pre-programmed conditional rules. Vogelaar demonstrates that our mood states are more complex than would be suggested by an averaged out measurement. She embraces this complexity by combining data-sampling systems with the physical experience of sound, rather than imposing any scientific framework or delimitation.
